History

Patterson Architects has a long, award-winning history in the Brazos Valley. Fred A. Patterson, Jr., AIA, began providing architectural services in 1983 under the business name of Design Intent. Patterson, who in 1979 graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design and received a Masters in Architecture in 1981 and began Patterson Architects in 1984. In 1998, the business moved to their current location at Texas Avenue and 31st Street, in the Searcy Building.
 
The former Searcy Clinic was built in 1951 from salvaged lumber from one of the original College Avenue houses built in 1903 that had burned. The low-lying Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired suburban professional building is faced with fossiladed Texas limestone salvaged from the 1949 Renovation of the Memorial Student Center at Texas A&M University.
 
While project types have varied, Educational Facilities make up the majority of the firms experience and
include additions and renovations to many of the elementary schools in Bryan. Most noteworthy are the awardwinning Fannin Elementary School, Alton O. Bowen Elementary and Robert C. Neal Elementary, Recreation Center, and Park. In College Station, Patterson Architects was commissioned to design renovations to many of the College Station ISD elementary schools as well as The Teen Center and the First United Methodist Church.
Projects for Texas A&M University and Systems vary and include the Emergency Operations and
Training Center and renovations to the University Center.
Fred Patterson has taken an active role in the historic renovation of downtown Bryan. Projects include
the Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley, Café Capri and Palace Theater.

• 1990 Citation of Outstanding Service to the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce
• 1991 Honor Award for Architectural Excellence in School Design
• 1992 Brazos Heritage Society Citation
• 1992 Young Architects Award, The Brazos Chapter American Institute of Architects
• 1995 Merit Award for Architectural Excellence in School Design

Fred has served on various community and professional boards and committees and takes great pride
in being a part of the Brazos Valley. Our goal is to help make Bryan-College Station a better place
to live and work and to develop design strategies to enhance the community.
